Burn 01:24
keep some of it and throw some away you need do no more devil’s in the holding tight to the light till the breathin’s gone and it just ain’t right and the fire don’t burn no more go down to the roots of who you are till you fill your sound running on empty out in the world been shot down since you were a girl it’s time you made some ground no rich man’s coat, no singin’ in silk gonna cover your pain take mama’s old dress for a spin till flowers grow upon your skin and the veil no more remains take what you need, to death you pray man’s law keeps no fair score and the devil don’t mean that much on sight when the breathin’s full and there’s no more fight and the fire don’t burn no more and the fire don’t burn no more

Honey & Fire 04:14
where are you now I can't hear you are you just there over the hill hidden by the grass the crow flies overhead circling around I'll keep on sending out my honey and my fire do you hear my words send some kind of sign oh dear one do you recall what we used to sing the sun dies for the night and the crow keeps talking I'll keep on sending out my honey and my fire by the watch of the crow memories beneath my collarbones the ache of the pressing where are you now I can't hear you are you just there over the hill hidden by the grass the crow flies overhead circling around I'll keep on sending out my honey and my fire

hauling through the bitter cold through the stormy oceans roll she remembers losing grace she remembers each man's face one more silence one more broken child see her tears distilling clear tiny crystals on her chin wish she hadn't touched your hand wish she hadn't let you in one more silence one more broken child I have seen the faces of sorrow they don't shake me now I have seen how friendships grow strange again I command the wind watch the winters come and go whisper in the silent snow all the women oh they know tear apart the way it goes I have seen the faces of sorrow they don't shake me now I have seen how friendships grow strange again I command the wind memories go with the air lessons of a season spent here you were and here I am there you are and here I stand how you wander how you run away again

Far Away 03:34
it happens when I am alone and surrounded I can’t find the right grave to grieve at far away, far away I don’t know where to look it’s not here don’t tell me I’m fine don’t say you’re by my side don’t tell me I’m the only one you love don’t talk about time when you’re so hard to find it doesn’t matter what you say you’re far away it happens when you’re no longer listening I can’t find the right way to leave far away, far away I don’t know how to see, I’m still here don’t tell me I’m fine don’t say you’re by my side don’t tell me I’m the only one you love don’t talk about time when you’re so hard to find it doesn’t matter what you say you’re far away you’re in and out, you’re in and out don’t tell me I’m fine don’t say you’re by my side don’t tell me I’m the only one you love don’t talk about time when you’re so hard to find it doesn’t matter what you say you’re far away it happens when I remember I can’t find the words to say far away, far away wherever you have gone you’ll still be here

oh Maggie Willow put your roots down life has been changing around your hometown you’ve been wandering and waiting for so many years, oh darling, stay here oh Maggie Willow they thought you a fool but lightning brings silence and houses are cruel you’ve been seeking answers in the Eastern call oh darling oh, Maggie look up what was broken has floated away see the cloud mosaics tumbling down oh, sweet Maggie you stand in the snow though the dark lingers, you know it’ll go it’s never so quiet as it feels in your hall oh darling oh, Maggie climb out you hold the charcoal of weathering faces and you’ve felt the boxes becoming small think what you’ll do with the time you have won writing and dancing to songs that you love a chair on the front porch another in time Oh darling, you’re doing fine
6.
One Day 03:59
one day you’ll stay close to me, home from sea the wind is slow, the crops can grow around here my heart told me watch the sun, you will run and burn your wings, although we sing the same tune all the jewels have no shine when the wind is sighing these days we say take your time, I’ll be fine remember me with every tree that shades you rain pours down in the night washing through the valley one day you’ll stay close to me, home from sea the sky is calm, the crops are strong around here
7.
Adeline 03:39
Adeline she walked away I didn’t know what she could hold Adeline she runs through the woods her fears broken and tied Adeline she turned away I didn’t know what she’d recall Adeline she runs to the sea carrying fistfuls of fire oh Adeline alone she has run Let go of her and she’s flown oh Adeline if she’d just meet my eyes I’d go to her myself Adeline she tried to stay I’ve seen her tumble and rise Adeline she echoes the mountain casting stones on the fire oh Adeline alone she has run I let go of her and she’s flown oh Adeline if she’d just meet my eyes I’d go to her myself oh Adeline alone she has run let go of her and she’s flown oh Adeline if she’d just meet my eyes I’d go to her myself I’d go to her myself

Oh Mama 03:14
warm the hearth, get out the wine he’s back, it’s felt like a long time she makes and plans with the land he knows he plants and builds and they grow she hears “I love you” when he says “oh mama” oh mama kittens and chickens running everywhere tending the home they share no they don’t speak the same way she does but she kisses and cooks and she loves she hears when they say, “oh mama, oh mama” oh mama together they dream of a girl they’ve never met laugh and play under the moon maybe her name will be June she can already hear her voice saying, “oh mama” oh mama

at home he sits and waits counting the days till December the holes in her sweater he prays that she will stay a little longer outside he walks the garden unfolding a heart that had hardened a cedar that might grow again at night he remembers a time when sitting alone was a joy throwing stones at a portrait of you learning to lose the life that he had I’ll be there for you in the long run I’ll call again in the morning the bare open walls in the back of his mind starting to recognize memories of dreaming that he’d pushed aside at home children are gone missing the games that were all kinds of colors and only for them watching the time they’ve gotten older I’ll be there for you in the long run I’ll call again in the morning

The Weaver 03:51
on the souls of my feet are written prayers and the weaver’s words are written in ash I can hear the weaver’s call I can hear the weaver’s call she says build me homes with nothing but breath canyon walls to find your drum on the souls of my feet are written prayers and the weaver’s words are written in ash I can hear the weaver’s call I can hear the weaver’s call she says climb the sky on ladders of wind carve a crown of bullhorn stars on the souls of my feet are written prayers and the weaver’s words are written in ash I can hear the weaver’s call I can hear the weaver’s call she says find the river guarded by death swim the current, take it’s teeth steal the stones of speaking

about

Named after a character Hawthorn (Heather Scott and Taylor Holland) imagines as a shared ancestor, Maggie Willow is created from parts of our mothers, grandmothers, wise people before them, and ourselves. The songs are a series of moments throughout Maggie’s life, exploring such complex themes as divorce, moving, parenting, healing from trauma, preparing for birth, and facing death. All the songs are either co-written or co-arranged by Taylor and Heather, centered in the powerful two-voice blend Hawthorn has come to be known for: “when they harmonize, the edges of their voices bleed together like watercolors on paper” (WBUR).

This sophomore venture from the Boston-based duo expands to a new soundscape with some of New England's finest instrumentalists: Alex Gasser, Lucia Pontoniere (The Ladles), Justin Nash Fisher (Los Elk), and Marco Giovino (Norah Jones, Robert Plant). Written in New England, recorded and mixed at Riverview Sound in Waltham, and with a release tour supported by the Passim Iguana Fund, Maggie Willow represents the best of the Boston area music community.
